Background

As a child, John Raymondd strived his best to do what was right, including attending school to study criminology and learn about the criminal mind, like that of his criminal brother, Tim. When his brother broke out of jail and attempted to rob John’s house, his plans were thwarted by a “Web” he himself created. By cutting the phone lines to John’s house, he worried local police who were trying to reach John. They entered his house and arrested Tim. Ever since, professor John Raymond, forensic medical doctor and famed mystery writer, has donned his Web costume as he wages psychological warfare against his enemies and ensnares criminals in the name of the law. Using his intellect, training, and courage, he tackles street-level crime and larger threats, eventually joining the Mighty Crusaders. His determination and sense of duty make him a steadfast hero, even without superhuman abilities.

The Web originally debuted in the Forties but he was still active and apparently quite fit well into the 1980s and beyond. Around this time, Archie started to apply a “junior” to his real name, implying that the later Web was the son of the original. They’re essentially the same character, however, and are virtually interchangeable, having the same skills, careers, etc. Heck, they both reference having a criminal brother named Tim. Archie continuity is, at best, a malleable thing and that’s putting it very kindly. In recent digests, they have introduced a new, unmarried version of Pow-Girl, who in past continuity was the wife of the Web.

During the New Crusaders period, John’s son Wyatt became a new Web.
