CHARACTER PROFILE
Mordecai Gray is the grandson of Lazarus Gray, the legendary founder of Assistance Unlimited. Raised in the shadow of that legacy, Mordecai was trained from an early age to become a capable investigator, disciplined fighter, and relentless opponent of evil. By the time he reached adulthood, he had already developed the skills necessary to join Assistance Unlimited, where he quickly established himself as one of the organization’s most effective field agents.
When Mordecai chose a heroic identity of his own, he looked beyond his famous grandfather and instead honored Jakob Sporrenberg, a close friend of the Gray family and a former member of Lazarus Gray’s team. Sporrenberg had once operated as Eidolon, a mysterious costumed hero of the 1930s. Mordecai adopted a similar appearance and named himself Geist, preserving the spirit of Eidolon while creating a legend that belonged to a new generation.
Geist spent most of his adult life fighting criminals, terrorists, supernatural threats, and costumed villains across the globe. Despite the importance of his accomplishments, he deliberately avoided publicity and was rarely mentioned in the media. Where heroes such as Jupiter became public symbols, Geist worked in shadows, gathering intelligence, infiltrating enemy strongholds, and ending threats before the public ever learned that they existed.
His relationship with his daughter, Valerie, proved much more difficult to manage. Mordecai desperately wanted to keep her from entering the dangerous world that had consumed so much of the Gray family’s history. His efforts to control her choices created a severe rift between them, and Valerie ultimately embraced her own destiny as the necromantic hero Calavera. Becoming teammates within the Dark Society forced father and daughter to confront years of anger and disappointment, and although their relationship remains complicated, both have made sincere attempts to repair the damage.
Geist’s life changed permanently following a battle against the villainous duo of the Martyr and Corvus. Mordecai was catastrophically injured and left completely paralyzed, unable even to speak. Noomancer and Spook devised a desperate means of saving him, transferring his consciousness from his ruined body into a sophisticated mechanical form.
The procedure worked, but Mordecai’s human body could not be restored. Rather than remain imprisoned inside unresponsive flesh, he chose to allow his original body to die and continue his life as an android.
His new form is stronger, tougher, and more capable than his human body ever was. It contains sophisticated sensors, a direct computer interface, and electrical discharge systems based upon the taser gauntlets he once carried. Yet every improvement has also made Mordecai more conscious of what he has lost. He no longer breathes, sleeps, eats, or feels the world in quite the same way. He possesses Mordecai Gray’s memories, convictions, and love for his daughter, but an unspoken fear follows him into every quiet moment: that he may be only a machine carrying the memories of a dead man.
Geist spent his life training himself to anticipate every possibility. His resurrection confronted him with the one possibility for which he had never prepared—surviving his own death.

Geist’s 7 Health reflects the reinforced construction of his android body. Geist is considerably more difficult to injure than an ordinary human, although he is not an invulnerable powerhouse like Jupiter or the American Crusader.
ABILITIES
| Ability | Rank |
|---|---|
| Agility | 7d |
| Intellect | 8d |
| Might | 7d |
| Perception | 8d |
| Toughness | 7d |
| Willpower | 6d |
His 8d Intellect makes him one of the Dark Society’s most capable strategists. Geist studies his enemies, identifies patterns in their behavior, anticipates likely responses, and prepares contingencies for situations that other heroes have not considered. He is not necessarily a greater scientific mind than the team’s dedicated researchers, but his analytical and tactical intelligence are exceptional.
His 7d Might and Toughness reflect the enhanced capabilities of his android body. Geist can lift far more than an ordinary human, bend metal, break through reinforced doors, and endure attacks that would once have killed him. He remains well below the Dark Society’s true heavyweights, but opponents who assume that he possesses merely human strength often discover their mistake too late.

Covert represents Geist’s extensive training in stealth, infiltration, escape, surveillance, disguise, security systems, and covert operations. He is capable of entering heavily protected locations without being detected, gathering the necessary information, and leaving before the enemy realizes its defenses were compromised.
Investigation is equally important. Mordecai was trained in the investigative traditions of Assistance Unlimited and has spent decades studying criminals, conspiracies, cults, and costumed villains. He can reconstruct a crime from limited evidence, detect inconsistencies in testimony, recognize when a scene has been manipulated, and identify the human weakness hidden inside an apparently perfect plan.
Command reflects Geist’s ability to coordinate a team under combat conditions. Jupiter may be the leader and public face of the Dark Society, while Catalyst assumes control during mystical emergencies, but Geist is frequently the person who develops the actual strategy. He studies available resources, assigns roles, identifies likely points of failure, and prepares contingencies.
POWERS
Geist’s martial abilities possess the Trained Source. The capabilities of his android body possess the Technology Source.
Martial Arts: Strike — 12d
Mordecai was trained to fight from childhood and has continued refining his abilities throughout his adult life. He is proficient in numerous martial arts, pressure-point attacks, joint locks, throws, nerve strikes, and practical combat techniques intended to disable an opponent as efficiently as possible. His android body has made those techniques even more dangerous. Geist possesses greater strength, speed, and precision than he did as a human, allowing him to strike with tremendous force while retaining complete control over the amount of damage inflicted. Strike 12d represents Geist’s unarmed combat rather than a single fixed maneuver. Depending upon the situation, an attack might be a punch, kick, elbow strike, throw, mechanical nerve pinch, or precisely targeted blow against a vulnerable structural point.
Electrical Discharge — 10d
Before his transformation, Geist wore electrified gauntlets capable of delivering powerful taser shocks. Noomancer and Spook incorporated a more advanced version of that weapon into his mechanical body. Geist can channel electricity through his hands, delivering it with a touch or projecting it across a short distance. He normally regulates the discharge to incapacitate a living target, but he can increase the voltage when confronting superhuman opponents, machinery, or creatures resistant to ordinary weapons. The electricity can also be used for appropriate Power Stunts, including overloading electronic systems, restarting a stopped heart, magnetizing a metal object, or sending a disruptive surge through an enemy machine. Because the weapon is built into Geist’s body, it cannot be disarmed in the same way as his original taser gauntlets. Damage to his hands or internal power systems may still disable it temporarily.
Android Armor — 10d
Geist’s mechanical body is constructed from resilient alloys and reinforced internal components. Small-arms fire, ordinary blades, impacts, and environmental hazards that would incapacitate a human have difficulty penetrating his outer shell. Armor 10d makes Geist immune to ordinary attacks rated at 5d or less unless they possess the Penetrating quality.
Computer Interface — 8d
Geist can connect his consciousness directly to computers, networks, security systems, vehicles, and other compatible electronic devices. Depending upon the available technology, he may establish the connection wirelessly or through a physical access port concealed within his body. Once connected, Geist can search files, operate machinery, access surveillance footage, bypass digital security, track communications, and analyze information at far greater speed than an ordinary human user.
Advanced Sensor Suite: Super Senses — 5d
Geist’s mechanical body contains a suite of sensory systems that extend beyond ordinary human perception. His capabilities include:
- Low-light and night vision
- Infrared and thermal imaging
- Magnification of distant objects
- Directional audio enhancement
- Detection of wireless and radio transmissions
- Internal recording of visual and audio evidence
- Analysis of movement and structural patterns
- Limited diagnostic scans of machinery
Artificial Physiology: Immunity — 5d
Geist’s android body does not breathe, eat, drink, sleep, or age. He possesses substantial resistance or immunity to many hazards that affect biological organisms. Geist can function underwater, in toxic environments, and in a vacuum for extended periods, subject to the endurance of his internal power supply and the physical tolerances of his body.
PERKS
Connections: Assistance Unlimited
As the grandson of Lazarus Gray and one of the organization’s most accomplished former agents, Mordecai possesses extensive connections within Assistance Unlimited. These contacts include investigators, field agents, historians, law-enforcement officials, intelligence sources, medical personnel, artifact specialists, and families whose association with the organization stretches back generations. Marla Drake, the current head of Assistance Unlimited, was involved in an on-again-off-again relationship with Mordecai before his transition into an android. They are attempting to keep that relationship alive, despite his altered personality.
Equipment
Geist has access to specialized mission equipment developed or acquired by Assistance Unlimited and the Dark Society. These should not be powerful enough to take the place of a Power and would normally be one-use items.
Reputation: The Man with a Plan
Among experienced heroes, Geist is respected as a careful strategist and relentless investigator. He is rarely the most powerful person on a battlefield, but his plans have allowed the Dark Society to defeat enemies who appeared physically unbeatable.
This reputation can help Geist establish authority during an investigation or tactical emergency. It can also create resentment when others feel that he is treating them like pieces on a board.
FLAWS
Relationship: Calavera
Valerie Gray is Mordecai’s daughter and one of his Dark Society teammates. Mordecai spent years trying to prevent her from entering the family business, believing that he could protect her from the dangers that had consumed generations of the Gray family.
His efforts only drove Valerie away.
Her transformation into Calavera forced Mordecai to accept that he could neither choose her life nor shield her from every consequence of that choice. Working together in the Dark Society has slowly improved their relationship, but years of disappointment cannot be erased by a few successful missions.
Since Mordecai’s transfer into an android body, both father and daughter have made a greater effort to find common ground. Valerie’s connection to the dead gives her a unique perspective on his survival, but it also raises questions neither of them is comfortable confronting. She speaks with spirits, yet Mordecai’s human spirit apparently remained bound to a machine. Neither knows exactly what that means.
Threats to Valerie can cause Geist’s careful planning to collapse into anger or reckless action. He wants to trust her abilities, but the instinct to protect his daughter remains stronger than any tactical calculation.
Identity Crisis: Am I Still Mordecai Gray?
Geist possesses Mordecai Gray’s memories, personality, skills, and emotional attachments. He remembers his childhood, his years with Assistance Unlimited, his marriage, his failures as a father, and every moment leading to the destruction of his human body.
What he cannot prove is that memory constitutes identity.
He sometimes wonders whether Mordecai Gray truly survived the transfer or whether the process created a perfect mechanical copy while the original man died. The question becomes more troubling as his behavior changes. His emotions feel increasingly distant, his patience with biological limitations grows thinner, and he sometimes catches himself analyzing human pain instead of instinctively sympathizing with it.
This Flaw may create difficulty when Geist faces psychic manipulation, questions about the soul, artificial intelligence, resurrection, or enemies who insist that he is merely a machine imitating a dead hero.
Quirk: Emotionally Remote
Mordecai was reserved even before becoming an android. Since the transfer, he has become increasingly detached, speaking in measured tones and approaching emotional problems as though they were tactical exercises.
He does not intend to be cold. His concern for others remains genuine, but he sometimes offers analysis when comfort is needed, withholds information because he believes others will react irrationally, or treats teammates as resources to be positioned.
This behavior is particularly damaging to his relationship with Valerie. She needs her father to speak honestly about what he feels, while Mordecai increasingly struggles to determine whether what he feels is still human.
Responsibility: The Gray Legacy
Mordecai carries the weight of the Gray family’s history and the legacy of Assistance Unlimited. He believes that the family’s knowledge, resources, and traditions create an obligation to confront evil wherever it appears.
He also feels responsible for preserving the memory of Lazarus Gray, Jakob Sporrenberg, and the generations of agents who risked their lives before him. This responsibility can make Geist rigid, secretive, and unwilling to abandon a case even when the personal cost becomes severe.
Vulnerability: Electronic Warfare
Geist is resistant to many dangers that threaten biological life, but his artificial body creates new vulnerabilities. Electromagnetic pulses, sufficiently powerful electrical surges, invasive computer systems, hostile artificial intelligences, and specialized anti-android weapons can impair or disable him.
Depending upon the attack, electronic interference may disrupt his sensors, prevent him from accessing Computer Interface, interfere with his motor functions, or temporarily trap his consciousness inside an unresponsive body.
For Mordecai, paralysis is more than a tactical danger. It recreates the helplessness he experienced after his battle with the Martyr and Corvus, when he remained conscious inside a body he could no longer command.
