Background

Aleksandr Vassiliev was a quiet man that valued his privacy – large public spectacles made him uncomfortable. It was that desire for solitude, along with his extreme patriotism, that had led him to become a cosmonaut in the first place. He had often dreamed of being in the quiet void of space during his boyhood… and now that he lives with the Assembly on the moon, he feels like he’s accomplished his lifelong goal.

He still remembered the night that he and Luna had been onboard the International Space Station, studying an unusual series of lightwaves being received from a faraway galaxy. The two of them had been huddled together when one of the lightwaves had struck the ISS, rattling it from stem to stern… and bathing the two Russians in its unusual beam. They had been altered, something that neither had realized at first, and when they reported it back to their superiors on Earth, they had been told to keep it from the other scientists onboard the ISS. They were replaced and brought back to Earth as soon as possible, where it was discovered that they were now superhumans. Dubbed Kosmos, he was immune to radiation and could generate powerful bursts of it, while his partner became Luna, able to manipulate the forces of gravity. 

The creation of the Assembly had at first fed into his nationalist impulses and he was excited to serve — though he also knew that any balking on his part would lead to the end of his career and potentially his life. The Russian government was aware of his greatest secret — his homosexuality, which remains a dangerous thing even in modern Russia. When Kosmos learned of Koschei’s plan to start World War III, he was persuaded by Octobriana that it was best for his homeland, despite the risks. Now that Koschei is no longer with the Assembly, Kosmos has become Octobriana’s loyal lieutenant.
