Background

The man known as Frank Verrano was brought into a hospital in San Francisco with no recollection of his past. As he was lying there, he was attacked by an assassin. The attempt on his life triggered a transformation into a body with pyrokinetic abilities, and he named himself Inferno. Along with the Hangman, who worked at the hospital as Robert Dickering, he took out the assassin and the backup coming to finish the job. In the meantime, lieutenant Lynn Barker tried to find him in the system, only to discover that there was no trace of him existing anywhere. It was later revealed that he had been assigned by General Jack Latham to infiltrate Project Shield, a black-ops project run by Arvin Halliday, a rogue Durlan in human disguise. Inferno’s memories are still hazy and unclear, however. When Latham helped the United States government form the Mighty Crusaders, he made sure that Inferno was placed on the team.

Able to change into a superhuman form, Inferno can create intense flame and he is able to use this to burn his way through steel doors and walls and can melt bullets before they reach him. He is immune to the effects of his own flame. When he activates his powers, he physically transforms into a very different-looking person (see image below).
