Biography
The Apostate (aka the Anti-Catalyst) attempted to seize control of the Magic Stone, which was housed in the mystical city of Primum Domum Suam. The Magic Stone was the origin of all magic in the universe, having pierced the veil that separated this reality from all the others. It crashed into the mountains and a city sprung up around it over the years — a hidden location known only to the highest adepts of the eldritch arts. The Dark Society had battled the Apostate in Primum Domum Suam, though he had managed to slay quite a few of the city’s residents before he’d been captured.
Two of those he’d killed had been Sepulchre’s parents. When they had completed their esoteric studies and been invited to live in Primum Domum Suam, they had wanted Layla to go with them. She declined, preferring to use her unique abilities out in what passed for the “normal” world. She functioned as an investigator into the strange and unknown — though sometimes the cases she took weren’t supernatural at all. Her powers are mystically-based but unlike her parents, she is not a traditional spell-caster.
Shortly after learning that her parents were dead, Sepulchre had set off on a two-pronged mission of revenge: she wanted to punish the Dark Society for failing to stop the Apostate’s rampage before it was too late and she also wanted to exert her own vengeance against the villain. This took place in The Dark Society Volume 7: Watcher in the Woods.
She was accompanied by Chuck, a dead teenager who had frequently paid her visits over the years, ever since she’d brought his killer to justice. Rather than move on to the appropriate afterlife, he’d apparently decided to spend eternity by assisting her. Dressed in a powder-blue prom tux, Chuck remains her sidekick in adventure.
When last seen, Sepulchre and Chuck were continuing to solve crimes around the world. Layla was offered a position with the Dark Society but she didn’t believe that she was well suited for a team setting.
