BACKGROUND: The Gifted is the name given to humans that possess the natural ability to tap into the most primal forces in existence – the stuff that normal humans called Magic. The Catalyst is the High Mage of his era and generally there is only one per century, though their tenure sometimes varied in length and occasionally overlapped. They could be recognized not only by their power but by a peculiar uniform that went along with the responsibility of wielding that much magical ability… an emerald set of clothing that changed appearance with the times but always bore a similar look.

Historically, the first Catalyst that we’ve seen in my universe is actually Anton Hellgate, born in England in the year 1511. By the time he was thirty, he had ascended to the rank of Catalyst — but it wasn’t long before he felt that true power lay in the dark arts. Quickly becoming an outcast in the magical community, Hellgate became known as The Apostate in most circles, with some referring to him as the Anti-Catalyst. In the late 1800s, he moved to Chile and for a time served as the head of the Cacodemon cult. Eventually moving to the United States, the Apostate clashed with the Claws of the Peregrine in 1947. He was mystically bound and remained in stasis until being freed during a wave of chaos in 2024. Hellgate returned in The Dark Society Volume 3 as an ally of a villain named Thanatos and subsequently made appearances in volumes 4 and 7. During this last adventure, the Apostate unleashed a powerful entity known as the Watcher onto the earthly dimension in a bid to gain supreme knowledge. He successfully received the answers to all of his questions, much to his dismay. Whether or not the Apostate will ever return again remains to be seen.

Isn’t having Sorcery and Wizardry redundant? I mean both powers can already mimic each other… with penalties.

Sorcery is black magic, Wizardry is white. I wanted to show that he had once been a master of Wizardry but he surpassed that by turning to the dark side, so to speak.

The better way to do that is to do stats for the different eras…. as in JLA Sourcebook.
