Background

David Merrywether was the son of a wealthy family, his mother and father choosing to spend their money by traveling to the far depths of the world. David accompanied them on their adventures and was with them when bandits had slaughtered his parents in Burma in the 1930s. Against all odds, he was been found and raised by a tigress — and during his time with her, his body and spirit underwent dramatic changes. By the time he’d entered young adulthood and decided to return to America, he had impressed the goddess that watched over all cats and she gave him the same gifts that she gave to her feline followers: he was able to see in the dark, was able to leap great distances, was able to climb almost any surface, and was possessed of nine lives.

As Cat-Man, David fought crime at night while running Merryweather Enterprises during the day. He eventually adopted young Katie Conn, an orphaned acrobat who had been forced into crime by her uncle. Katie became Kitten and the two of them became a famous duo, fighting criminals of all types both alone and alongside the Freedom League.

Katie eventually transitioned into the hero known as Grimalkin as she became an adult, leaving David to continue alone. When his longevity began to raise questions, he faked his own death and pretended to be his heir. As such, he now lives in extreme seclusion, running his business from the shadows and venturing out only as Cat-Man. He has recently taken young Chloe Foster under his wing after her parents were killed by one of Cat-Man’s enemies. After two years of extensive training, she has joined him in his crusade as Mouser.

Note: While Cat-Man is in the public domain, this particular version of him is not. All references to Mouser, the Freedom League, and Grimalkin are specific to this version. Art is by Lee Gaston and was commissioned by me.
