Biography:

When a centuries-old sorcerer named Lord Saker built a machine called the Shadowspear to harness the supernatural powers of the world, he upset the natural order of the universe. In response, the four elements, unimaginably powerful spirits who together formed the foundation of existence, each chose an ordinary human who had been killed by their element, and resurrected him or her.

Jeff Murphy was helicopter pilot with the Coast Guard who died in a crash and came back to life with the ability to control the air and fly. It was a running joke about the terrible luck that would plague Jeff after his rebirth – he ‘died’ multiple times, often in gruesome fashion, before returning to eventually win the day. It was Jeff that ultimately defeated Saker the first time around – when the wizard accepted a fight with Vortex, sans powers, Jeff immediately cheated and used his wind abilities to shove Saker through a portal into Hell.

Vortex typically served as the scout for the team, investigating the scene before the rest of the group arrived. He was more-or-less second-in-command, too, offering sound advice and strategy to Morningstar. Eventually, Jeff married Janet Brown, a ghostly hero known as the Haunting, who served with Strikeforce America.
