Sherlock Holmes? Yep.

Another Will Meugniot rough from Gravedigger!
Another Will Meugniot rough from Gravedigger!

So I posted a new episode of The Shadow Fan yesterday and feedback has been good, as always. It’s been a fun show so far.

Work on the mystery project continues — I’m making good progress, as I’m over 4,000 words on it. Working on these kinds of things always ends up making me long for my own original projects, though. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the other stuff but it definitely feels more like “work” than it does when I’m writing Gravedigger, Lazarus Gray or The Rook. I figured I’d be able to name the project by now but there’s apparently some holdup in terms of getting all the contracts back and signed by all parties involved.

It was announced at the Pro Se Shindig II event last weekend that I’ll be writing a Sherlock Holmes novel for Pro Se. It’s going to be part of their digest series and should be an interesting exercise for me. I love Holmes but aside from a brief appearance by the character in The Rook Volume Five, I’ve never written him. I’ll try to capture the Doyle style but I’m not going to be doing a pastiche… this is me, writing Sherlock Holmes. It’s an honor to write the Great Detective and I hopefully won’t wilt under the pressure.

Did you guys notice the Will Meugniot sketch I snuck into the Next Big Thing post from yesterday? Well, here’s yet another — this time showing Charity with her associate Mitchell. I really like the character of Mitchell but I have to admit — as a diehard follower of Mystery Science 3000, I feel the need to add an exclamation point after his name whenever I say it (“Mitchell!”). Joe Don Baker, I salute you!

I’m off to do more work on the mystery project!

Friday Fun

First of all, thanks for the amazing success of The Shadow Fan, my weekly podcast devoted to The Shadow. It’s been downloaded a LOT in just 24 hours and I’ve seen it tweeted and re-tweeted all over the place. The Shadow is such an amazing character and I’ve always wondered why there wasn’t a fan-oriented podcast featuring discussion related to him… glad to see I’m not the only one with a pent-up desire for Shadow talk. I have some fun places for episode two, coming next week.

Don’t forget that tomorrow is my Shindig, devoted to talking about The Rook Volume One Special Edition and to Monster Aces, the Pro Se anthology created by Jim Beard and Tommy Hancock. I’ll have a story in that collection and I think it’s going to be a smash hit (the anthology, not necessarily my story in it! lol).

Those of you who are Ubergeeks fans — note that we’ll once again be recording the show on Monday night, so episode 35 won’t be posted until Tuesday of next week. Real life gets in the way of scheduling sometimes!

Work continues on Gravedigger — I’m approaching the 25,000 word mark!

Announcements and Stuff!

So today I posted the first episode of The Shadow Fan’s Podcast. It’s going to be my weekly dose of Shadow news, reviews and a whole lot more. I’m not the world’s biggest Shadow expert but I have read dozens of novels, every comic book appearance of the last 40 years and I’m the proud owner of virtually every Shadow reference book ever published. And that’s aside from my interests in the radio show, the Alec Baldwin movie, etc. So while I may not be the be-all, end-all of Shadow knowledge, I have my fair share and I’m going to be focused on keeping you appraised of Shadow news in the future. I’ll also be reviewing all the newest comics from Dynamite and the novel reprints.  It should be on iTunes in the next day or so but until then, just click The Shadow Fan link at the top of this blog.

Don’t forget I’ll be doing a Shindig appearance this Saturday from 2 pm – 3:30 pm and you never have to leave the comfort of your home to join the fun!

Also, don’t forget that The Rook Volume One – Special Edition is now out and for sale. You can buy it at either Createspace (where I make more $$) or Amazon (where it’s more convenient, I know). George Sellas did a wonderful new cover and four beautiful interior pieces (one of which is shown here). Buy it and show your Rook love.

This Saturday — Join Me For a Shindig!

Are You Ready for the Shindig?

This afternoon, Pro Se Press is bringing the pulp con experience straight to your computers, partnering with Shindig to offer a full slate of programming. The full press release is below — please come and join me for my chats about Reese Unlimited and The Sovereign City Project!

PRESS RELEASE
Pro Se Productions, a publishing company known for adventure, action, crime, fantasy, super heroes, New Pulp, and original stories featuring Classic characters, announces the beginning of a partnership with a new internet platform that will bring a brand new experience to Pro Se Fans, literally bringing a convention like activity into the homes of anyone wanting to find out more about Pro Se.

On Saturday, October 13th from 1 PM CST to 7 PM CST, Pro Se Productions will be hosting an online Promotional Party spotlighting the entire company. This event is being done in conjunction with http://www.shindig.com, a platform designed to host small, medium, and even massive book tours, promotional events, Q & As, or in this case, a gala event focusing on one of the up and coming Publishers of cutting Edge New Pulp fiction today. Writers, artists, and creators associated with Pro Se will be providing readings, panels, and one on one question and answer sessions online while participants can wander in and out, just like an actual convention, and enjoy the events as they take place. Also, fans who attend the event at any point in the day can actually enter into private chats with up to four other people and set up their own ‘rooms’ while also participating in the reading/panel/etc. that is taking place. This allows for hundreds and hundreds of participants to be available.

“This is the ultimate con experience in a sense,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and EIC of Pro Se Productions stated, “taken and turned into an all Pro Se event. People can attend panels, go to readings, meet authors and creators, and do it right in front of their computer. Pro Se is definitely excited about this opportunity, not only because its a neat thing to be able to do, but also because it’s a platform that allows us to reach out not just to our own little conclave of fans who frequent our site, see us at Conventions, and/or buy our books. This is an opportunity to open the doors of Pro Se up to any and all who have ever read a thriller and enjoyed it, who have ventured into Space and wanted more, who sneered with the villain and celebrated with the hero of some great story. Pro Se has all that and more to offer readers today, and although there’s stories of every genre under our banner, they all have something in common. They are pure escapist over the top fun. And now, thanks to Shindig, Pro Se’s ‘Puttin’ The New In Pulp’ Promotional Party is a chance for readers of all type to see what we do, meet our creators, hear some great stories, get great one day deals on Pro Se books, and even pick up some giveaways!”

Attending the ‘Pro Se- Puttin’ The New in Pulp’ is free for anyone who wants to attend. Interact with creators, hear readings, participate in panels, take part in contests and simply learn about one of the brightest stars in modern Pulp and adventure publishing. Both established Pro Se Authors as well as new authors will be present. Past and current releases will be focused on, but there will also be much discussion on books and events to come from Pro Se. Come in for your favorite author or a panel subject that interests you, leave when you’re done, then come back whenever you want to. Anyone interested in attending can RSVP at http://www.shindig.com/event/prose. This is the sign in site for the event and will also be where times for panels, readings, and Q & As will be posted as a schedule becomes available.

Pro Se also announces today that this event is only the first. Pro Se will be providing opportunities for readings, panels, and creator meet and greets as well as online launch parties for Pro Se staff and material in the future. “Expect,” stated Hancock, “that an event, anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, from Pro Se will happen every two weeks at a minimum, even more than that possibly with the fantastic books and such we have on the horizon.”

Saturday, October 13, 1 PM – 7 PM CST Pro Se Productions – ‘Puttin’ the New in Pulp’ Promotional hosted by shindig.com. RSVP and find out more at http://www.shindig.com/event/prose or by emailing Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net! And expect updates on this fantastic event in the coming days!

That Day That Comes Before Friday

I should be typing THE END to the latest Lazarus Gray story today. This one will be the first story in Volume Four, which will probably come your way in late 2013. It turned out well, I think, with some really exciting scenes. I tried to be very fair to the guest stars in the story, as well (Thunder Jim Wade & his crew). Hopefully, readers will get a kick out of it.

Following that, I’d like to focus on finishing off the first Gravedigger story.

Don’t forget to go and put in your RSVP at Shindig — that’s the site where I’ll be spending part of this Saturday, taking part in Pro Se’s promotional party. I’ll be on from 2 pm CST to around 3:15 pm CST, talking about Reese Unlimited and the Sovereign City Project. Please come out and join me!

Finished “The City Destroyers” by Norvell Page. It was good and definitely the best Spider story I’ve read. I think I’m still more of a Shadow/Avenger guy, though. Having said that, I’m about to start Shadow of Evil by C.J. Henderson, which is the first new Spider novel in 65 years!

Our artwork today is by the legendary Will Meugniot and will appear in Pro Se’s new edition of THE ROOK VOLUME FIVE. When that will actually come out is beyond me but I’d guess… late 2013 or early 2014. Still, Esper (of Claws of the Rook) looks great, doesn’t she? Will is one of my favorite artists and it was such a thrill to have him do the artwork for this. He did six interior images in all and they’re all gorgeous.
