Digging in the dirt: the secret origin of Gravedigger

allstarsquadron_homage_clean_smallCharity Grace – aka Gravedigger –  has appeared in two solo volumes so far (with a third on the way!) and she played a big role in the  “crossover” novel that paired her with Lazarus Gray and The Peregrine. She’s become one of my most popular creations, thanks in no small part to the stunning costume design that George Sellas came up with. But where did she come from? What inspirations led her to spring forth from my crowded little mind?

What follows is an essay that ran in the first volume of The Adventures of Gravedigger. If you’ve read it before, hopefully you’ll enjoy seeing it again — if it’s your first time, expect a few insights into my creative process. I’ve tweaked it from the original in a few places, removing a link to the blog and altering the name of Max Davies’ costumed identity.

Our art today is from my buddy George Sellas and is an homage to one of my all-time favorite comic book covers: All-Star Squadron # 1. The original was drawn by Rich Buckler but I think George captured the feel perfectly, replacing the original DC heroes with my own. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

And now on to the main event:

The Immortal Princess Femi

lg03_femi_smallA good villain can make all the difference.

With The Peregrine, most of his enemies were dead and buried by the end of each adventure, though he had a few (The Warlike Manchu, for instance) who made return appearances. When I created Lazarus Gray, I knew that one of the things I wanted to do with the series was to create a series of recurring villains. I wanted him to have a vibrant rogue’s gallery that could return again and again.

But which of his enemies stands above the rest? If our hero is defined by his villains, which of those foes is his dark mirror?

Obviously, Lazarus Gray has Walther Lunt, his former mentor. Lunt was a major force in Volumes One and Two but his death in 1936 (“Die Glocke”) has yet to be undone so aside from casting a looming shadow over the series, he hasn’t been a physical force since then.

So is he really Gray’s arch-enemy? I think he still qualifies but I do think honorable mention must be given to the immortal Princess Femi.

Reese Unlimited to cross over with AC Comics!

PRO SE PRODUCTIONS’ REESE UNLIMITED AND AC COMICS CROSSOVER ANNOUNCED

AC Comics, one of the longest lived and popular independent comic companies in the industry, and Pro Se Productions have teamed up to bring AC’s characters to life in prose adventures! The first such work, a digest novel by Barry Reese, NIGHTVEIL: THE QUIET GIRLS, is due for release in a matter of days. Pro Se Productions announces today that not only will Barry Reese, the creator of the Reese Unlimited imprint, return to the world of Nightveil, he will do so by bringing AC’s mystical heroine face to face with his own characters, Lazarus Gray and Gravedigger!

“As a longtime fan of Nightveil and the entire AC Comics line,” says Reese, “it was an amazing honor to get to write the character in THE QUIET GIRLS. Now to have the opportunity to cross Nightveil over with my original creations…! Words really can’t describe how excited I am about this project. Believe me when I say that I’m trying my best to make fans of all these characters happy with the end product.“

The as of yet untitled crossover title will appear in early 2018. NIGHTVEIL: THE QUIET GIRLS will appear in coming days and more AC works are in process, including works by Bobby Nash and Gary Phillips, as well as anthologies spotlighting various characters.

“This crossover,” says Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is just an opportunity at greatness too awesome to pass up. To have Bill Black’s Nightveil not only in the more than capable hands of Barry, but to actually have Barry’s own creations fight side by side with her makes for a near perfect storm of New Pulp and Super Heroics. As both a professional and a fan, I am on the edge of my seat for this book.”

The AC/Reese Unlimited Crossover will feature a stunning cover by George Sellas.

Soon…

lg7_04_smallI have it on good authority that Lazarus Gray and crew will be returning to print soon — Volume 7 is going to pit our heroes against a wide array of enemies. It will resolve (for good, this time!) his long-running feud with Princess Femi and her handmaiden Madison Montgomery… and we’ll also see Assistance Unlimited deal with the dread threat of The King In Yellow! Plus: a brand new foe by the name of El Demonio makes his debut!

I’m really proud of this one, which will sport a cover and interior art by our old friend George Sellas! Enjoy this great image of Femi and Madison as a preview of what’s to come!

Stay tuned!

Current Activities

rookclaws1_catalyst_smallThis week is being spent doing some additions to the Captain Action novel — I’m pretty proud of how this book has turned out and I’m really curious to see if folks that enjoyed the first two books by Jim Beard will like this one. The majority of the plot of this book came from Jim with most of the writing being done by me — with significant contributions and oversight from  Jim. I think the meshing of our styles has produced something quite unique.

Next week I’ll return to working on Nightveil. I’m about 20% of the way through that one so if things go well I will finish it sometime in April (fingers crossed). I’m having a blast writing this character!

George Sellas is going to be working soon on a new cover… for quite awhile, I’ve thought about having some sort of sourcebook for my universe. It would contain bios, essays, the timeline, etc. Do any of you have an interest in that sort of thing?

I have to finish Lazarus Gray Volume 8 and write the first volume of Assistance Unlimited: The Silver Age in 2017 but then I got an idea for a new iteration of Gravedigger… I need more time in the day!

Thanks to everyone for supporting the release of Lazarus Gray Volume 6 — sales are brisk and I appreciate all the fans of Assistance Unlimited.

Our art today is of my character Catalyst — he’s popped up in several Peregrine stories and is a member of The Claws of the Peregrine team in the late 1940s. A predecessor of his appeared in several Lazarus Gray tales, as well. He’s actually one of my oldest surviving characters, having been created way back in 1986! This image is by Anthony Castrillo.

The Adventures Continue!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

NOT EVEN DEATH STOPS A HERO- ‘THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME SIX’ DEBUTS!

THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY appeared to end in the aftermath of GOTTERDAMERUNG with Lazarus Gray making the ultimate sacrifice, but all may not be as it seems. Pro Se Productions and its author centered imprint Reese Unlimited proudly announce the release of THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME SIX, now available in print and digital formats.

“Lazarus Gray,” says Tommy Hancock of Pro Se Productions, “is one of the most popular characters New Pulp has yet to produce. Combining all the necessities a classic Pulp hero should have with the emotional weight and modern relevance the writing of Barry Reese brings into play makes Gray a staggering figure in genre fiction today. And this sixth volume of tales only ups the ante that much more, bringing a focus on not only Gray’s companions, but really centering on the importance of a single man to the battle for justice.”

The only clue to his identity was a small medallion with the words ‘Lazarus Gray’ stamped upon it. He took that name and became one of Sovereign City’s greatest heroes, and formed an alliance with other lost souls like himself. Together they were Assistance Unlimited…and now they face their greatest loss ever!

As the remaining members of Assistance Unlimited resume their lives, they find new allies and old who intend to honor the memory of the man who brought them together…

…but as they plunge into a new mystery, they find themselves facing the possibility that the death of Lazarus Gray may not have been the end for him after all…

Prepare to walk the shadowy worlds of death and life as a new chapter begins in THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME SIX!

Featuring a fantastic cover by Ted Hammond, wonderful interior illustrations by George Sellas, and print formatting and cover design by Sean E. Ali, THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME SIX is available now at Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Lazarus-Gray-Six/dp/1544184522/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1488468493&sr=8-1&keywords=lazarus+gray+volume+six and Pro Se’s own store at http://www.prose-press.com for 15.00.
