The only villain to face Doc Savage twice, John Sunlight is one of the greatest pulp villains of all time. Having escaped from the Russian authorities and their Arctic prison, Sunlight stumbled upon Doc’s Fortress of Solitude. Breaking inside, Sunlight found some of the dangerous weapons ever invented – after stealing them and hiding them in bases around the globe, Sunlight began selling the weapons to various warlords, amassing enough wealth to build upon his true scheme: to rule the world. Sunlight wanted to end world hunger, stamp out intolerance and bring about a new golden age for humanity. Of course, all of these things could only be accomplished if the world’s leaders bowed down to Sunlight. After his initial scheme was foiled, Sunlight was believed dead for a time — but in truth, he had escaped and was hiding away in a castle. Though he eventually met what appeared to be a true death, it’s possible that Sunlight could have survived to face either Doc Savage again or any hero in your own campaign. It should be noted that Sunlight had tremendous respect for Doc, offering to spare his life if he would only join him. He saw Doc as his only equal in the world and this caused him to want to sway him to his side. He also had a preference for dressing all in the same color, though it varied from day to day.

Notes: One of my all-time favorite characters, X-O Manowar starred in a 68-issue series back in the Nineties. He’s recently been revived but this writeup is based on the “classic” version of the character, since the revival is so new that I’m not certain what elements may have changed. A Visigoth barbarian who claims an alien warsuit for himself, Aric is transplanted to the modern day, where he quickly claims Orb Industries (a shell company owned by the Spider Aliens). Taught the modern tongue by his sentient armor, Aric is now a hero in the modern day, working alongside beings like Shadowman, The Eternal Warrior and Bloodshot.

And yes, I know he’s not by any stretch of the imagination, a pulp character — but I felt like statting him up so you’ll just have to get over it. I’ll return to pulp-related writeups after this one, I promise.

The Domino Lady is really University of California, Berkeley-educated socialite Ellen Patrick. When her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, is murdered, she puts on a domino mask and a backless white dress to avenge him. She would arm herself with a .45 pistol and a syringe full of knockout serum, but often her best weapon was her beauty, which often distracted and entranced opponents, or at the very least led them to underestimate her, allowing her to outwit them. Such wiles rarely worked upon her female adversaries, however.

She steals from her targets, donating most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, and leaves a calling card with the words “Compliments of the Domino Lady”.

Biography:

Nathaniel is the Catalyst for his age, capable of kick-starting the human genetic stock. His lover Rachel Winters (later Caine) is also one of the Gifted, as Nathaniel is. As revealed in the first Catalyst story: “Gifted are humans with the capacity to sense and manipulate magic. But only once a century does a true Catalyst emerge… a High Mage. A man or woman with the natural ability to tap into the most primal forces in existence. That’s why you’re wearing that uniform. It takes different forms, depending on the era… but it’s always the same basic look. Very recognizable.” A former London police officer, Nathaniel becomes the Catalyst in 1942 and eventually becomes an important member of The Claws of The Rook.

As a personal aside, Catalyst is one of my oldest characters — I created him way back in 1985!
