*The latest in a long line of Hangmans
Michael “Mikey Ice” Minetta, a hitman for hire, lived in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn with his wife and daughter, Gabby. He was hired to “take care” of a man named Petey but on his way back for the hit he was attacked by the Hangman (Robert Dickering) who proceeded to beat up Minetta and hang him from a street lamp, killing him. As Minnetta’s soul drifted down to Hell, he saw Dickering’s soul rise up to Heaven, finally having freed himself from his role as The Hangman.
Minetta came to in Hell, where he was met by Satan. The archfiend reveals that there has been many Hangmans over the years, collecting souls of those that are deemed unworthy of existence. Satan offers this now open position to Minetta — it means that he would be restored to the world of the living, where he could protect his wife and daughter from his many enemies. It also means that he will Satan’s servant on Earth until he can cleanse his soul.
I liked how they brought in Robert Dickering, though there had never been an element of the supernatural to that character before. Even so, I dig the Hangman lineage being the ‘Ghost Riders’ of the Crusaders Universe.
Given his former career as a hitman, he’s a capable fighter even without his powers.
