While working towards Native American rights, Eric Adams was beaten close to death and blinded by those who opposed his viewpoint. An Indian Shaman granted him two gifts after he suffered this loss – a bag of magical charms and a raven through whose eyes he could see again. Adams became the Hangman to continue to fight corporate corruption.
Unlike the more traditional Hangman, this version is not directly related to the Comet (though he did debut in the Comet’s magazine) and he has actual superhuman abilities. In many revivals, people seem to want to turn the Hangman into a mystical hero and I don’t mind that — the Crusaders actually have few characters that fill that category: they often don’t put Darkling at the forefront, Mr. Justice is far too powerful for most stories, and, despite his name, The Wizard is not a supernatural figure. Anyway, the Hangman functions well as an anti-hero as his war on corporations could lead him into conflict with more traditional heroes.
