Laurel Kent of Earth was a young woman who happened to be the 30th century direct descendant of Superman. She first introduced herself to a teenage Superboy, then a prominent member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, as ‘Elna’ (an anagram of “Lane,” the surname of Superman’s wife Lois Lane). Superboy was initially quite attracted to her, until he discovered to his chagrin that they were related. Laurel had inherited her ancestor’s superhuman invulnerability and applied for Legion membership, but was rejected on the grounds that Legionnaires Mon-El and Ultra Boy had the same ability and she had no other powers. Laurel Kent became a trusted associate of the team, and joined the Legion Academy to further her training in hopes of one day becoming a full Legionnaire.
After many adventures as a student at the Academy, Laurel eventually adopted a costume to honor her ancestor. Though unable to join the Legion at the time due to their longstanding policy against duplication of abilities, Laurel was able to use her Academy-issued Flight Ring, her innate invulnerability, and her never-say-die attitude to accomplish many heroic deeds. In the wake of the Magic Wars, Laurel was finally asked to join the Legion and she remains a member to this day.
NOTE: Any suggestions that Laurel was actually a Manhunter sleeper agent are, in fact, quite stupid. One thing that I really like about this version of Laurel is that she has a huge legacy to uphold and one godlike ability (invulnerability)… but aside from that, she’s a normal person. Her ability ranks are up there with a well-trained soldier or police officer but nothing beyond that. As a result, she has to often play a support or defensive role which you wouldn’t expect from someone wearing the “S”.
I love playing characters like this! It makes you have to be very thoughtful about how you approach combat.
