“I’m a human flying fish!”
“Don’t mention that swimming chump to the Human Flying Fish, Sardine!”
Did I mention that I’m a human flying fish?

Victor Bragg, an ex-swimming champ was envious of Aquaman’s abilities. Knowing this, his friend and scientist, Dr. Krill offered to try out a new experimental operation on him which would make him Aquaman’s rival. He agreed and had his lungs converted into gills. With newfound powers based on the flying fish, Dr. Krill predicted that Aquaman would not be able to stop Bragg.

Bragg is soon sent on missions to steal sunken treasure and other items of value from under the sea, out-performing Aquaman each time and making his escape in a helicopter that Dr. Krill has waiting for him.

Eventually getting wise to the Human Flying Fish’s tactics, Aquaman devises a trap for the crook, luring him with a false report of a priceless cargo of uranium that was lost at sea. Taking the bait, the Human Flying Fish attempts to steal the uranium (really an empty container) and is soon incapacitated when Aquaman summons electric eels to his aid. He then uses sword fish to knock down Dr. Krill’s helicopter and the two crooks are arrested.

The Human Flying Fish reappeared years later, as a member of the Super Foes. By this time he had begun training a sidekick – Sardine – in the ways of villainy. Unfortunately, he and his allies (Penguin, Toyman, Cheetah, and Poison Ivy) were defeated by the Super Friends. In the aftermath, The Human Flying Fish and Sardine ended their partnership. Sardine’s ultimate fate is unknown.

Still not willing to give up on his dreams of becoming a successful criminal, the Human Flying Fish was hired to work security for Vandal Savage’s Trident organization. In this capacity, he actually succeeded in capturing Aquaman before eventually facing defeat once more.

With the amazing power of human flying fish at his disposal, it is only a matter of time before Bragg reappears.

  1. I love that Ramona Fradon drew Dr. Krill, as a folksy, pipe-smoking older guy rather than a more conventional mad scientist. It made him distinctive even though it didn’t change the story any — in my head, he has an Irish brogue like Barry Fitzgerald.
