Background

Dr. Erica Nordheim was on her first day on the job with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) when the event dubbed “The Skip” took place. “The Skip,” which most sources connect to a glitch involving the Large Hadron Collider, resulted in everyone on Earth losing five minutes’ worth of time. The incident took place during a test conducted at 11:43 a.m. EST on New Year’s Day – during this period, Nordheim was watching the testing sequence when she noticed a strange fiery glow engulf the Collider. She screamed at 11:43 a.m., hoping to alert others that something was wrong. At 11:48, her screaming stopped and she suddenly found herself transformed into something far more than human. While the rest of the world experienced a “Skip,” her physical body had been paralyzed and her consciousness had somehow traveled from one end of the universe and back, giving her a different appreciation and understanding of the fundamental nature of reality. She has since theorized that if others somehow experienced something similar they might have abilities much like her own – to date, she has not encountered anyone else that claims to have been conscious during those ‘missing’ five minutes.

Nordheim soon found that she was able to manipulate energy at a subatomic level… and that she was not the only person in the world to have undergone a change. Superpowered men and women now made up approximately 1% of the world’s population – though the level of power granted to each varied wildly. Some merely looked different, others had abilities that were minor in usefulness.

Operating as Singularity, Erica has become the most famous superhuman in the world. She continues to work with CERN and so far no one suspects the beautiful young scientist as being the woman they see on television and the Internet. She is a confident young woman, even more so since her transformation, and has a good sense of humor, loves cats, and enjoys spending her weekends traveling around the solar system. Where some might go mad with her powers, Erica has become a well-centered and empathetic person. If she has any flaws, they are these: She displays a stunning lack of interest in discovering the source of The Skip – it’s almost as if something prevents her from exploring this mystery. This is made all the more concerning because of her second flaw – an insatiable curiosity about new experiences and how the universe works. She has nearly caused more than one interstellar war because of her meddling in others’ societies. Her supreme confidence in her own abilities can also be a detriment at times.
