My Favorite Pulp & Pulp-Influenced Movies

200px-Indiana_Jones_in_Raiders_of_the_Lost_ArkThere’s a lot of great pulp-influenced movies out there — here’s a quick rundown of some of my favorites. Check ’em out if you haven’t already!

First up is, of course, Raiders of the Lost Ark. All the Indiana Jones films are great but you gotta start with the first (and best).

Next, we have The Shadow. I know a lot of people don’t care for the Alec Baldwin flick but I thought it was great fun, even if it took some liberties.

The first two Mummy movies are wonderful fun — in fact, The Rook’s wife Evelyn was inspired by the female lead in these films.

Lee Falk’s Phantom came to life in a fun-filed movie starring Billy Zane. Is it perfect? No. But it’s still wonderful — and my young son really enjoyed it.

And finally, The Rocketeer. Based on the Dave Stevens’ comic, this was a fun little film — and features the deliciously lovely Jennifer Connelly.

What are some of your faves?

One Comment on “My Favorite Pulp & Pulp-Influenced Movies

  1. I agree whole heartedly with your picks. I often watch those movies when I want to be in a pulpy mood.

I would also have to include:

    1. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
If there ever was to be a love letter to the media of the pulp era, it is this one. Everything from G-8 and his Battle Aces to Buck Rogers seems to drip out of this movie. This one has it all.

    2. Star Wars
Lucas Wrote this because he couldn’t get the rights to Flash Gordon. You can see strains of this throughout his space opera epic. Also I get a real Monk and Ham vibe from R2 and 3PO.

    3. Darkman
Another example of a director not getting the rights to the a pulp property. Sam Rami’s cult classic is schlocky as all get out but still great with a pretty stellar cast. You can see the influence of the Shadow with the face changing.

    4. The Re-Animater
This Lovecraft adaptation is one of many by Stuart Gordorn and one of many of his collaboration with Jeffery Combs. It is 80’s horror movie amazing.

    5. Buckaroo Banzai
This is the 80’s new wave version of Doc Savage. While I kinda found Peter Weller a little flat, everyone else more than makes up for it.
